Phat Loot Integrates Chainlink VRF to Help Power Provably Fair Guppy General Breeding
Phat Loot is excited to announce that we have integrated Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on Polygon mainnet. By integrating the industry-leading decentralized oracle network, we now have access to a verifiable and tamper-proof random number generator needed to help ensure all users have a fair and equal chance of breeding a King Guppy General — of which only 15 exist — in the new Paradise Wars Auto-Battler game.
With Guppy General Breeding for our new Auto-Battler Game Paradise Wars set to release at the end of this year, we had been looking for a way to build truly random processes around NFT breeding and distribution. By using two Guppy Gang NFTs and Guppy Treat tokens, holders are able to breed a Guppy General NFT, which has one of 15 mood bonuses, as well as a rarity effect that determines how strong the mood bonuses are. Each of these 15 moods will have one King Guppy General, which makes them highly sought-after competitive play within top-tier decks.
In order to help make sure that all users have an equal chance to receive one of these rare generals when opening eggs, we needed access to a provably fair random number generator — a problem harder than it looks at first glance.
For example, on-chain RNG solutions like block hashes introduce vulnerabilities where miners can choose to publish a block only when it would generate more favorable results for themselves. On the other hand, off-chain RNG solutions are opaque, requiring users to trust that the centralized data provider won’t manipulate the results to their benefit. Both solutions become increasingly concerning as the amount of value being secured by the RNG solution goes up.
Chainlink VRF solves the issue of on-chain randomness by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Phat Loot smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This helps provide users with automated and publicly verifiable proof directly on-chain that the result of each egg that uses Chainlink VRF for randomness is provably fair and cannot be tampered with or predicted by the oracle, outside entities, or the Phat Loot team.
“Chainlink VRF is the industry standard for a verifiable, on-chain randomness solution. It’s a simple way for projects to ensure the public that the randomness underlying a specific smart contract function is fair and tamper-proof, making it important to continue Phat Loot’s dedication towards transparency and decentralization.” — Ashish, CBO for Phat Loot DeFi.

About Chainlink
Chainlink is the industry standard for building, accessing, and selling oracle services needed to power hybrid smart contracts on any blockchain. Chainlink oracle networks provide smart contracts with a way to reliably connect to any external API and leverage secure off-chain computations for enabling feature-rich applications. Chainlink currently secures tens of billions of dollars across DeFi, insurance, gaming, and other major industries, and offers global enterprises and leading data providers a universal gateway to all blockchains.
